La Quinta Mazatlan
Natural Dyes Workshop
Painting with cochineal
600 Sunset Dr, McAllen, TX
jan 4, 2015

This workshop was held in conjunction with the two person exhibition entitled Por Aguas  and was the last stop during the Tierra Firme Border Trip.

In this class La Quinta Mazatlan students explored dyeing with the most precious insect in Mexico called, cochineal. Historically, cochineal was used to achieve the most luscious of reds, pinks, and purples on cloth. It has a high lightfastness and can achieve an array of cool and warm tones. Participants experienced the process of preparing dried cochineal bugs for dyeing and practiced creating painted patterns on silk and cotton using thickened mordants.
